NORTH HERTS GUILD OF SINGERS

We are a happy and successful choir which has been going strong for more than 50 years. Based in Hitchin, we are one of the best-known and best-supported choirs in the area.

Earthquakes, whirlwinds and a full house - Elijah

It's always exciting to have a packed venue for one of our concerts, especially when the audience is as involved and enthusiastic as the one we had on November 25 for Mendelssohn's Elijah. There was barely a spare seat in St Mary's, Hitchin, for the two-hour performance which ended with a roar of appreciation for our superb musicians, the Beaufoy Sinfonia, and our four outstanding soloists Sophie Benfield, Maya Colwell, Philippe Durrant and Johannes Moore. Our thanks to them, and as always to music director Harry and rehearsal accompanist Colin for guiding us through a demanding but thrilling term. Now it's on to Christmas carols!

We have lots lined up for 2024, but the most exciting thing is that we are to sing the Bach mass in B minor in the spring. In March 2020 we were all but ready to perform this amazing work when we had to cancel, with less than a week to go. Sadly, many things were cancelled for everyone, but we are now really looking forward to having another go. Four years on it’s likely that our MD, Harry Bradford will have some new ideas as to how he wants the performance, which will be interesting…. We have already booked our friends, the period baroque orchestra, Musica Donum Dei, who were due to play for us in 2020.

WHy not come to one of our concerts?

Our Next Concert

We hope you will come along to one of our concerts! We have our usual Christmassy one on December 16, and another in the summer, as well as the Bach B minor Mass in March.

For Christmas there will be plenty of carols and Otčenáš (Our Father), by the Czech composer Janáček. We'll welcome back tenor Alex Hume and be joined for the first time by the official royal harpist, Alis Huws.

In July there is Rossini's Petite Messe Solennelle - which actually isn't solemn at all, and a delight.

We also usually have a workshop open to all. Do keep an eye on our website.

'The very first chord the choir sang was electrifying - I knew the concert was going to be thrilling.'

Audience member, Elijah
